Low Voltage Outdoor lighting

Low voltage outdoor lighting is an inexpensive and novel concept that does not require high voltage power like the conventional lighting. The beauty of low voltage outdoor lighting systems is that they give exactly the same amount of light that the high voltage or conventional lighting systems give. Therefore, they are now fast gaining popularity, because of their features.

Low voltage lighting consists of low voltage outdoor lighting transformers, outdoor low voltage lighting fixtures along with appropriate cables that are required to install outdoor low voltage lightings. These lights come in different shapes and sizes. They are made of durable solid brass or cast iron metal and look stylish. They are also available in a variety of colors and glass options and as mentioned earlier, they consume less amount of electricity than the incandescent lamps.

Prior to installing the low voltage outdoor lighting, you must decide a few things.

Here are some tips to help you:

Tip # 1: Plan where and how you want the lights to be placed. There are a few types of layouts like straight run installation, loop installation, split load installation and the “I” installation. Your choice of layout can help to minimize the voltage drop. This can make some of the lights dimmer than other lights. However, the voltage drop can work to your advantage. If you do not mind the differences in the lamp brightness then the low voltage will extend the life of the lamp that will require less frequent replacements.

Tip # 2: Select the transformers with care. You should add up the wattages of all the possible lamps that you plan to use. For obtaining optimum brightness from the light, the total lamp load should not be less than one-third of the transformer's wattage ratings.

Tip # 3: Once you have decided this. You need to plan the installation of the lamps. You can do this by walking around the place and envisioning how and where you can install the lights. You can then make a rough sketch of the layout.

Tip # 4: After you have decided upon the location, you can plan the laying of the cables by looking at the pre-designed layout. They have to be laid in the most direct route and the shortest route possible. It is recommended that you position the lights before you connect them with the electrical cables. Remember to leave additional cable for each light so the positioning of lights can be modified in the future. When all the electrical connections are finalized, you have to bury the cables in the soil.

Low voltage outdoor lighting has more advantages than the conventional lighting systems. It is a good choice for highlighting the Christmas tree or other ornamental trees. They can be used for beautifying gardens and for showcasing landscape features. Hence, low voltage outdoor lighting is a better option than the conventional incandescent lamps.
